Castello's House

St. Bernadette’s Adult Animal and Ecological Sanctuary

Program Overview: A gentle, trauma-informed counseling and emotional wellness hub offering a secure, low-pressure environment nurturing bonded relationships with calm, high-touch, low-reactivity animals—such as therapy-trained dogs, miniature donkeys, dwarf goats, rescue rabbits, and gentle flock birds.

The Sanctuary

  • Sensory-Adapted Barn Architecture Built with wide, sound-dampened aisles, non-slip rubberized flooring, low-dust bedding materials, and soft, natural lighting to prevent acoustic echoing or sensory distress for both residents and animals.
  • Structured Daily Care Rhythms Visual task boards and tactile routines guide residents through feeding, grooming, brushing, and health checks—building predictable, rewarding daily habits rooted in empathy for all of Christ’s creation. Daily hand-grooming, gentle brushing, and petting sessions that provide rich proprioceptive feedback, lower systemic cortisol, and release chronic muscle tension.
  • Non-Verbal Emotional Bonding Dedicated quiet-time suites where residents can simply sit, lie, or recline alongside therapy dogs or small animals in low-demand silence—building deep companionship without speech or social pressure.
  • Somatic Earthing Zones Climate-controlled indoor/outdoor domes featuring smooth river-stone walking paths, living moss walls, gentle misting stations, and warm, damp soil beds where residents can walk barefoot, feel natural textures, and regulate their nervous systems in nature. Flowing water features that provide calming and gentle ambience.
