The St. Genesius Digital Technology Guild
Focus
Harnessing educational technology, creative digital media, and adaptive computing for communication and problem-solving. Youth explore child-friendly coding logic, AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) software customization, digital art/animation, media archiving, simulated web safety, and graphic design. Transforming visual-spatial strengths, pattern recognition, and hyper-focus into digital literacy while scaffolding executive function skills.
Accommodations & Pediatric Interventions
- Visual & Logical Workflow Scaffolding Dual-monitor workstations with visual screen overlays, color-coded file directory maps, step-by-step macro scripts, and pictorial guides breaking complex digital tasks into linear micro-steps.
- Child-Centric Hardware & Adaptive Input Devices Ergonomic hardware including vertical mice, heavy-duty trackballs, mechanical keyboards with high-tactile switches or large-key layouts, transcription foot pedals, eye-tracking navigation, and speech-to-text integration tailored for fine-motor fatigue or physical mobility differences.
- Sensory & Visual Ergonomics Ultra-quiet, fanless CPU hardware to eliminate electronic coil hums; soundproofed acoustic partitions; flicker-free anti-glare high-refresh monitors with blue-light filtering; dark-mode system defaults; and active noise-canceling headsets.
- Digital Safety, AAC Labs & Executive Function Scaffolding Sandboxed, error-proof software environments with automated auto-save; gamified simulation tools for practicing online boundary safety and digital etiquette; and dedicated AAC customization labs—run in partnership with the speech-language team at St. Joseph of Cupertino’s Focus & Processing Center—where youth personalize their own visual vocabulary boards, so the voice a child builds here is the same voice honored everywhere on campus.
- Child-Paced Focus & Low-Stimulus Micro-Environments Low-distraction work pods free from social or time-pressure quotas, supported by height-adjustable standing desks, scheduled brain/sensory breaks, and joint co-facilitation by IT mentors and Occupational Therapists monitoring for eye strain and cognitive fatigue.
